Pittsburgh-Area Transit Authority Union Rejects Contract
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The union representing 2,200 bus and light-rail drivers and other employees of the Pittsburgh area's transit agency has voted to reject a proposed four-year contract.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 announced the tentative deal last week, but said details would not be released pending ratification.
The union membership rejected the contract on Monday, however. They include drivers, maintenance and service personnel, administrative employees and supervisors.
The transit system has some 200,000 daily riders.
The last contract ratified in 2012 included a wage freeze, more pension contributions by workers, and health care concessions. It expired June 30.
The union hasn't threatened to strike, but has asked the authority to resume negotiations and have the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board appoint an arbitrator.
