Local Organizations Host Pet Food Distribution Events So Pittsburghers Can Feed Their Pets During The Coronavirus Pandemic
WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (KDKA) - Local organizations are making sure Pittsburgh-area pet owners can continue to feed their cats and dogs during these uncertain times.
There were two pet food distribution events in the Pittsburgh area Friday.
One was at the Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin with the Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team.
Two weeks ago, they filled more than 1,000 cars with just dog food. This week, they offered cat food as well and prepared to distribute 75,000 pounds of food.
The Beaver County Humane Society also hosted its first large-scale drive-thru pet food distribution event on Friday. Staff and volunteers wore face masks and gloves, while those who picked up food were asked to do the same.
The Humane Society says it's had an increase in calls for help and the shelter recently received two truckloads of pet food to give to family in need.
They say they want to make sure people can afford to feed their pets during this pandemic.
