Pitt Bans Hoverboards From Dorms, Other University Housing

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - They were the hot item this holiday season, but with so many safety concerns, universities across the country are taking notice and putting in tight restrictions on hoverboards.

Locally, the University of Pittsburgh has issued a ban on having them in campus housing, reports The Pitt News.

According to their report, Panther Central issued an email to all students with the new rules.

The move comes after several reports of the boards malfunctioning and catching fire.

The new ban, which goes into effect March 13, affects dorms and Pitt-owned apartments, The Pitt News reports. At that point, the university is asking their students to leave them at home.

However, students can continue to use hoverboards outside on university grounds.

Until the new rules go into effect, Pitt students are being told not to use the boards indoors or charge them indoors.

Other schools, including Notre Dame and Auburn, have issued similar bans.

Amazon and Overstock have also stopped selling them citing safety concerns.
