Pitcairn Police Chief Scott Farally says there were two apartment units in the building, but only the first floor was occupied. The residents were not home at the time of the fire.

Two firefighters were treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

The Allegheny County deputy fire marshal determined the fire was arson, and through their investigation and surveillance footage, police were able to identify 23-year-old Michael Cruse, of Pitcairn, as a suspect.

According to a criminal complaint, Cruse had been drinking with several others at the home when a fight broke out.

Cruse allegedly told police he lit a sheet on fire and placed it at the rear door of the home. He also allegedly confessed to breaking several windows, saying he was "just trying to scare them."
