Pirates' Scout Rene Gayo Talks About The Rise Of Starling Marte

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - Pittsburgh Pirates Director of Latin Development Rene Gayo joined The Cook and Poni Show on Friday to talk about the new six-year deal for Starling Marte, a player he is responsible for bringing to the Pirates.

"It's great for the Pirates, Starling and his family," Gayo said.

Gayo knew he had found a very good player when he signed Marte as a young teenager, but he admits that he is surprised that he signed a six-year deal so soon.

"He is a great character kid," Gayo said. "I was blessed by God. I got lucky."

He knew early on that Marte was a special player who had a future in the majors. He is just a little surprised how quickly it has all happened.

Gayo told the guys the he thinks Marte can be a guy who can hit 30 home runs a year much like Pedro Alvarez.

"I think he can," Gayo said. "He won't hit the majestic home runs like Pedro Alvarez does, but the ones that go 391 feet count the same."

Gayo also was responsible for finding outfielder Gregory Polanco, another star soon to arrive in Pittsburgh.

He says Polanco is very similar to Marte and is another kid with great character and a big strong kid with plenty of speed.

Gayo thinks the Pirates future with Andrew McCutchen, Marte and Polanco is very bright.
