Pirates Recall Infielder Brent Morel From AAA

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Word came out yesterday that the Pirates had sent relief pitcher Phil Irwin to AAA, now today the club announced that infielder Brent Morel will take his spot on the big league roster.

Morel hit .215 (20-for-93) with six doubles, a home run and 11 RBI in 25 games with Indy this season, making 21 appearance at third base and five at second base.

He appeared in 194 big league games with the White Sox between 2010-2013. Morel was claimed by the Pirates off waivers from Toronto Feb. 24.

It doesn't appear as though this will be a long stay with the Pirates for Morel as they'll need to fill the fifth spot in their rotation in the near future, with Morel a likely candidate to be sent back down.

While many were hoping it would be top prospect Gregory Polanco getting this call-up, the Pirates obviously elected to go in a different direction.

To hear when you might finally see Polanco in a Pirates jersey, check out The FAN Morning Show's interview with Pirates President Frank Coonelly who talked about the contract rumors surrounding Polanco and when the team thinks he'll be ready for his first taste of the major leagues.
