Pirates Offer $15.3 Million Qualifying Offers To Russell Martin And Francisco Liriano

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The Pirates offered $15.3 million qualifying offers to two of their pending free agents in catcher Russell Martin and pitcher Francisco Liriano Monday.

What the Pirates have done by extending these offers to Martin and Liriano is guaranteed that if the players decline them and sign with another team, that team will have to forefit a first round pick to the Pirates as compensation.

Since the installation of the qualifying offer rule, no player has yet to accept a qualifying offer made to them by their current team, and it is believed that Russell Martin will not be an exception to that rule as he is by far the top catcher on the market and is in line for a major pay raise.

Liriano though, coming off a year in which he missed a significant period of time dealing with a strained oblique last year, may not entice teams enough to give up a first round draft pick to sign him at the age of 31.

Both Martin and Liriano now have one week to decide whether or not to accept the offers.
