Pirates Fans Coping With Wild Card Loss To Giants

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Pirates' 2014 playoff run was over as quickly as it started.

Today, fans are still getting over the sting of watching their team lose in the National League Wild Card Game Wednesday night.

"The grand slam made it go downhill. After that, it was just we couldn't get the hits and just couldn't get the pitching. We went through how many pitchers last night?" Jon Hale said.

Despite the 8-0 loss, the Pirates and their fans agreed about many things after being handled by Giants' pitcher Madison Bumgarner.

"He did what he wanted to do. He filled up the strike zone. He made it tough on us. And when they got up early, obviously it was trying to scratch and claw our way back and he was good from the first pitch to the last," Neil Walker said.

"The pitching of the Giants, that really slowed our bats down. I mean you can't doubt the Pirates. They put on a good show and they had a good run so, you know, they made it to the playoffs for a second year in a row. So, I mean, you can't really doubt them," Mike Nichols said.

Yet, these Pirates made back-to-back trips to the postseason and had a chance to catch the St. Louis Cardinals down the stretch.

"We are still proud. We gave ourselves a chance to play meaningful baseball in October and it just makes us that much more hungry to win the division next year. But, not to take away from this year. We know it was a good season," Josh Harrison said.

And Harrison may have had the team's best season.

"Josh Harrison. Just a standout. All the things he did in the field and his batting and his hitting. He was just fabulous. To see him come from a utility player and see how he performed this year," Jill Weiss said.

Now, Pirates fans can look forward to Spring Training, which is only a few short months away.
