Pine-Richland School Board: Use Bathroom Matching Biological Sex

GIBSONIA, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - A school board in the Pittsburgh suburbs will no longer allow students to use restrooms based on their expressed gender identity.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the Pine-Richland School Board had been allowing that, but voted 5-4 Monday night to formally adopt a policy requiring students to use the restroom corresponding to their biological sex, or unisex restrooms.

The following message was sent to families Pine-Richland students alerting them to the new policy:

"This resolution agreed to by a majority of the Board of Directors of the Pine-Richland School District indicates our support to return to the long-standing practice of providing sex specific facility usage.  All students will have the choice of using either the facilities that correspond to their biological sex or unisex facilities.  This practice will remain in place until such time that a policy may be developed and approved."

The board had discussed the policy since March and had been allowing students to use restrooms based on their stated gender identity. The U.S. Department of Education has warned school districts that they could lose federal funding if they don't do that.
