Pileup Crash On I-90 In Erie Blamed On Lake-Effect Snow

ERIE, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - It took crews hours to clear wreckage from a 15-vehicle pileup being blamed on lake-effect snow.

The crash happened along Interstate 90 in northwestern Pennsylvania.

State police say the crash closed down the interstate in Erie County early Thursday afternoon. That's when at least 15 people were hurt in chain reaction crashes near Girard, about 20 miles southwest of Erie.

The eastbound lanes reopened about midnight, but PennDOT Region 1 spokesman Jim Carroll said the westbound lanes would take much longer to clear. State Police said they reopened mid-morning on Friday.

Most of the injuries were described as moderate.

Police say the crash involved at least five tractor-trailers and multiple passenger vehicles.

On a different section of I-90 in Ohio, officials say snowy conditions caused a multi-vehicle crash of more than 50 vehicles, including a Greyhound bus. The highway was shut down there for more than 14 hours.

Officials there say about 20 people were injured.

There was also a major pileup crash in Michigan that claimed the lives of three people.
