Candy Store Unveils New Pickle Juice Soda

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – You can get anything you want at Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop.

"I think we probably have over 2,500 different types of candy in our store, stacked from floor all the way to the ceiling," says owner Chris Beers.

He says that's at least five tons of candy in his Strip District store. He also owns a shop in Beaver County and another in Ohio, selling a wide array of oddities. He says he sells 500 pairs of socks each week.

"We have over 250 varieties of glass-bottled soda here, all of them are made with pure cane sugar," Beers says.

He has local soda from Natrona, and familiar favorites from the past. But he reaches for something completely different.

"The latest addition to our collection is Pickle Juice Soda," he says.

He says Pickle Juice Soda is a viral vintage.

"Got it into our store about three days ago, put a post online, and that social media post went crazy. It got picked up by Mashable. It got picked up by Cosmopolitan. It's been picked up by almost every network and every single publication we could find," he said.

Reading is one thing. But who's willing to take that first sip?

"I've drunk pickle juice and eaten pickles when I've played softball, for cramps," one customer said.

But he wasn't interested in trying it with soda.

A young woman had a different opinion.

"It actually tastes like pickle juice. And then, just a little bit more carbonated. Pretty sweet. I like it."

Despite the way it sounds, it's a mighty fine brine!
