Pgh. Public School Officials Trying To Fix Crowding At Wood St. Station

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Dozens of Pittsburgh Public School District students wait at the Wood Street station for a bus home every day. Not a yellow bus, a Port Authority bus.

"In a perfect world, if I had my desire, we would have control over transportation. We would have yellow buses that we have in house that we take the kids safely to school and back home again. But that's something that we don't currently have," explained Superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet.

Why are all these kids taking Port Authority buses from the Wood Street station?

Several reasons: two school bus companies went out of business, other bus companies have a shortage of drivers and the closing of the Liberty Bridge is causing more congestion. The school district is trying to change some routes.

"We're looking at routes everyday. As far as timing, what can we do to change to make sure wee get back to some normalcy. We're looking at it everyday. Doing as much as we can to help support transportation issues that we have right now," Dr. Hamlet said.
