Bicyclist Struck & Killed By Vehicle In North Union Twp.
NORTH UNION TWP. (KDKA) -- One person was struck by a vehicle and killed in North Union Township Monday morning.
It happened around 10:30 a.m. on Connellsville Street.
The suspect would go 15 miles before he was captured. The detailed description of the vehicle came from people who tried save the victim's life.
"Its just horrific," said witness Heather Sisler.
State police say 47-year-old Gary Lewellen of Arnold was on his bike when 22-year-old Roman Herrin plowed his south bound pickup truck into him.
"It just kept going after it hit the gentleman and he rolled 50 feet near the gentleman," Sisler said.
Heather Sisler's relatives and a passing nurse tried to save the unresponsive cyclist.
"An RN or nurse came and was giving him CPR, but it was really bad," Sisler said.
Lewellen was pronounced dead at Uniontown Hospital. Herrin was captured 15 miles north on Route 119 just past the Everson exit. Why herrin didn't stop is the question.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Herrin faces homicide by motor vehicle charges as well as leaving the scene of an accident.
