Peregrine Falcon Finds New Suitor After Mate's Death
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A suddenly-widowed Peregrine falcon may have found a new mate.
Hope, who is nesting atop the Cathedral of Learning, has been spotted flying around with a new male falcon, according to the Tribune-Review.
This is great news as her mate E2 was found dead in a backyard in Friendship last week. Peregrine-watchers had feared for the fate of Hope and the three eggs she is sitting on, as being a single parent could present challenges.
Bob Mulvihill, an expert at the National Aviary, previously predicted that she may not stay alone.
"There is a possibility that an unmated male may discover her. She may in some way signal that she is absent of a mate, a male may come in, could be interested, would then proceed to help provision, become a stepdad," Mulvihill said.
With luck, Hope may soon lay more eggs, which will blend with her other three from her previous mate.
