People Celebrate Chinese New Year With Colorful Parade

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Colorful dragons, musicians and other performers marched through the streets of Squirrel Hill on Sunday. This was the beginning of a new tradition in Pittsburgh, a special celebration of the Lunar New Year.

"That's the happiest Chinese festival for all of us, that's just like the American Christmas, we're so happy to have this parade to celebrate Chinese culture," said festival-goer Hong Jiao.

People were also thrilled to see diversity among those attending.

"It's much more fun than I can express, it's wonderful, I think especially I'm so excited to see so many Americans joined in the parade, its wonderful," said Tiana Zhang.

Over 300 people from various community organizations took part in the festivities. Many say the event highlighted how far the city has come in terms of diversity.

"The neighborhood itself is very diverse and my son is going to Alderdice and he is taking Japanese so its really amazing to see what's going on in Pittsburgh," said Bill Gasson.

The parade was part of a two-week celebration of the Lunar New Year.
