Peduto Wins Democratic Nomination For Pittsburgh Mayor In Landslide

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- First-term Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has won the Democratic nomination for mayor in Pennsylvania's second-largest city.

Bill Peduto, 51, handily beat back two challengers in Tuesday's Democratic mayoral primary.

It was a landslide victory for Peduto, who seeking a second term as mayor. He captured about 70 percent of the votes cast on Tuesday.

Rev. John Welsh got 17 percent of the vote, and City Councilwoman Darlene Harris got 13 percent of the vote. Peduto has no Republican challenger in the November election.

Several hundred people greeted Peduto with a round of cheers and applause as he entered the banquet hall in Banksville just after 10 p.m. on Primary night.

The Associated Press had earlier declared him the winner of the race.

Peduto said when he came into office four years ago, people wanted reform and more professionalism, and his administration gave them just that.

Asked how the next four years would be different from the last four years, Peduto told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "It's time to take on bigger challenges. How do we make sure there are opportunities for all Pittsburghers to enjoy this boom we'll be seeing in new economic development that's just ahead?"

And, he said he wants to make sure every city neighborhood has a chance to see the success that some areas have already enjoyed.

"There are big challenges, but we will tackle them head-on," Peduto said.

Elsewhere on Primary Day, Allegheny County Sheriff William Mullen defeated challenger George Satler in the Democratic primary election. Our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports there were no Republican candidates, but Mullen could face a challenger in November.
