Peduto Excited For Job Growth & New Development

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - While President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were unveiling a new job training grant program at the CCAC campus in North Fayette Wednesday, one man got not one, but two mentions for the job he is doing so far.

Mayor Bill Peduto joined the KDKA Radio Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway to talk about the president's visit and new development in the city.

The president said Peduto is an "outstanding mayor."

"[It was] kind of surreal, when you're standing there and you're tweeting a picture of the guy and he's the leader of the free world and he's calling you out by name," Peduto said.

The president and vice president rarely make public appearances together outside of campaign season. Peduto said that made it a special and surreal experience.

Peduto said Pittsburgh was chosen as the site of the president's job training grant program because of the history of "the city's manufacturing and technology."

The mayor hopes that this program will, "bring back jobs to the rust belt, 21st century manufacturing," jobs.

The mayor also talked about the expansion of Bakery Square in East Liberty. The groundbreaking for Bakery Square 2.0 is Thursday near the old Nabisco plant.

"We are witnessing a rebirth of East Liberty," he said.

He says with Google and other companies there are plenty of job opportunities.

"We'll see over 400 engineer's now calling Pittsburgh home," Peduto said.

The mayor is announcing even more development Thursday. The mayor says he and the Penguins are planning on making an announcement on a new dek hockey rink within the city.

This one will fittingly be in Bloomfield right next to Paul Sciullo Field. Officer Sciullo was one of three officers killed in April 2009 by convicted killer Richard Poplaski.

"[Officer Sciullo] was an avid hockey player, a great hockey player," Peduto said. The mayor recently inducted Officer Sciullo into the Italian American Sport Hall of Fame.

The mayor says the Sciullo family is amazing and hopes the new dek hockey rink will give children a way to, "follow in Paul's footsteps."
