Parkway West, Fort Pitt Tunnel Overnight Closures Resume

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- PennDOT announced the return of overnight Parkway West and Fort Pitt Tunnel closures happening every night this week.

Most people think PennDOT is done with work on the Parkway West, but that's just not the case.

"We're not done; obviously, the project continues through August of this year," said PennDOT District 11 Steve Cowan.

Now that may sound worse than it is, but the work is just finishing up on what wasn't completed last year. It all starts Monday night with a full closure of the outbound Fort Pitt tunnel.

Crews will be working on joint repairs and some drainage inside the tunnel," said Cowan. "That's going to be continuing for these next several weeks."

However, the weather has prompted the cancellation of Monday night's total closure of the Parkway inbound.

"Tonight we're just going to have a closure of the Parkway Center on-ramp to 376 inbound," Cowan said.

After Monday night, they'll alternate closures this week of the Parkway inbound and outbound overnight. After that will be the major weekend closures.

"We're going to have four full closures of the Fort Pitt Tunnel, two in each direction, and we're going to have two Parkway West closings for paving operations," said Cowan. "We'll work that with the Fort Pitt Tunnel schedule."

That's a total of four total weekend closures in one direction or the other between now and the end of May. So, it you do the math, that's four weekends out of the next seven that something will be closed.

But PennDOT will be kinds to Penguins and Pirates fans.

"Typically, we won't have any work occur until one hour after any sporting event, particularly the Penguins games," said Cowan.
