Weekend Fort Pitt Tunnel Construction Wraps Up Early

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The construction on the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel wrapped up ahead of schedule Sunday, allowing the tunnel to reopen to traffic.

The outbound side of the tunnel was scheduled to be closed until 6 a.m. Monday, but it reopened shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday. Crews were paving and milling the road as part of the $14.17 million tunnel repair project.

Meanwhile on the Liberty Bridge, PennDOT initially said on Friday that no work would occur on Sunday, but the schedule has since changed.

  • From 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, two outbound lanes and one inbound lane will be open on the Liberty Bridge.
  • From 8 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, there will be a single lane open in each direction.
