Ohio Driver In Critical Condition After Rear-Ending Hay Baler On The Highway

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a man was seriously hurt when he slammed his car into the back of a hay baler being towed with no tail lights.

The crash happened early Saturday on U.S. 68 near Springfield. Authorities say 74-year-old Teddy Rice drove his 2013 Ford Expedition into the left rear of the baler and overturned. The Mechanicsburg man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Dayton hospital where he was reported to be in fair condition.

The baler was being pulled by a John Deere tractor operated by 40-year-old Karl Deselem with no tail lights.

The patrol said Deselem had a van driven by a friend following him but earlier lost contact with that vehicle when it was involved in a separate, less-serious crash.
