Officials Issue Warning After Person With Measles Rides Port Authority Bus

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Officials are asking people to come forward, after it was discovered that a person rode a Port Authority bus while infected with measles.

The Allegheny County Health Department says the woman was first exposed to the measles in New York state.

It's an extremely rare case because she'd gotten her vaccination.

"Most of the time, people who have been vaccinated shouldn't get measles, but this person seemed to have a breakthrough case," Dr. Ron Voorhees, of the Allegheny County Health Department.

According to health officials, the woman rode the northbound 64 Port Authority bus Feb. 14 between Fifth and South Highland Avenues at 9:12 a.m.

They say anyone who rode that bus between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. may have been exposed. Additionally, they are asking anyone who may have been exposed to self-report.

"If people haven't been immunized or had measles, they need to be on the lookout if they develop fever and a rash," said Dr. Voorhees. "We want them to call us."

The woman has also been to the Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside. Chemo patients have a weak immune system. But most of us should be okay.

"Most people are protected," said Dr. Voorhees. "They've either already had the measles… and anybody that's gotten two doses of vaccine, should be in good shape."

Officials say if you think you might be affected and show symptoms between now and March 7, to contact your primary care provider.

"We don't have any additional cases at this time, but they wouldn't be developing - until at the earliest - this weekend and into next week," Dr. Voorhees said.
