Officers Responding To Traffic Accident End Up Delivering Baby

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police officers headed to the scene of a car accident ended up finding more than they expected overnight.

Cecily Kate Freeman and her mother are resting comfortably after some tense moments very early Saturday morning. The 7-pound 3-ounce newborn is less than 24 hours old, but she's already demonstrated a flare for the dramatic.

"When she wants what she wants, she will get it," said the baby's father Alan Freeman. "Yes, it has me very scared for whomever she winds up with as a partner."

Parents Alan and Laurie knew it was time to have their second child and rushed from their home in Bethel Park to West Penn Hospital on Bigelow Boulevard.

The couple was only a few miles from the hospital when Cecily Kate decided it was her time. So they stopped and asked two city police officers working a traffic accident near Bigelow and Herron Avenue for help.

"I told my husband he had to stop and get the police man's help, because she was coming and sure enough, there she came," said Laurie.

Alan says the cops told him they weren't trained for childbirth, but they didn't hesitate to help.

"One of them actually found me a blanket, sort of talked me though it and kept me calm and I caught the baby," said Alan. "We got the baby out, go it on her chest and came running to the hospital."

"They were dealing with an accident or something," he added. "They didn't expect somebody to pull up having a baby, took them off-guard."

The couple made it to the hospital and today Cecily Kate is healthy and almost ready to join her big brother Alister. The family wants to thank Pittsburgh Police officers for their assistance.

"Thank goodness they were there, because when I saw them, I said 'we've got to stop and get some help.'"
