North Side Water Attractions Remain Dry Due To Setbacks

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Despite it being the season for fun in the sun, the pavement was bone dry at a spray park in Troy Hill on Thursday.

"We had an electrical problem last week. And then over the weekend, someone broke into our facility and did damage to it," Pittsburgh Chief Operations Officer Guy Costa said.

A notice was posted about the closure and repair work. Spray parks officially opened last week, only running during the weekends until school lets out. But, over the hot Memorial Day weekend, the spray park in Troy Hill offered no relief.

But Costa said there's good news for this weekend.

"I'm happy to report that that spray park will be up and running this weekend," he said.

But it's not the only issue on the North Side.

Normally, Lake Elizabeth at Allegheny Commons Park would be filled by this time of the year, but a big leak and a costly repair is causing setbacks.

"It's leaking thousands and thousands of gallons of water a day," Costa said.

The lake is usually emptied at the end of the summer and refilled at the beginning, but now remains dry until a major leak can be fixed.

"There's two ways to do it. The cheap way and the right way and we want to make sure we do it the right way," Costa said.

The city says the lake costs about $80,000 to repair and they're looking for contractors, hoping to have it filled in a few weeks.

"We're committed to make sure we get these infrastructures up and running in a timely manner."

Another big draw on the North Side are the Water Steps on the North Shore. The steps were finally flowing again on Thursday, but had been dry before that due to a leak.
