NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – Two people were injured in a head-on crash involving a Port Authority bus on the North Side.

The crash happened near the intersection of Penfort and Essen Streets in the Spring Hill/City View area around 6:30 a.m.

"The driver of the [minivan] came down the wrong way, leaving the exit gates, smashed through the gate and went head-on into the bus," Port Authority Police Sgt. Brian O'Malley said.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital. O'Malley says both victims were conscious and alert when they were transported in "probably ... minor to moderate" condition.

Only three passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash. Two suffered minor injuries, but were able to leave on their own.

O'Malley says "potential charges do exist" for the wrong-way driver, pending further investigation.
