NHL Analyst Eddie Olczyk Likes Pens' Chances Moving Forward With Fleury
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- NBC Sports' NHL Analyst and former Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Eddie Olczyk joined The Cook and Poni Show on Thursday to talk about the Penguins and the four-year extension given to goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.
Olczyk was the head coach of the Penguins in 2003 when Fleury made his debut in the NHL, so he has been watching him from the beginning, and he likes the idea that the Pens extended his deal.
"I was with him since day one, so I do have a soft spot in my heart for him, but I do believe he can get it done," Olczyk said. "The last couple of years, and the last two years in particular, the Pens have not gotten to the Stanley Cup Final because of the goaltending. I mean the goaltending has been just fine."
Olczyk admits there are still question marks surrounding whether or not Fleury has put the playoff demons behind him, but it has been other reasons for the Pens early playoff exits.
He thinks the Pens looked around the league and realized there might not be a better option than the one they already have in Marc-Andre Fleury.
"It's a very fair contract," Olczyk said. 'I am happy for Marc-Andre."
Olczyk also told the guys that what the Penguins are doing right now on the power play are Mario Lemieux-type team numbers.
"Right now, they are doing everything right," Olczyk said. "It is lethal. It has been fun to watch."
