New Pitt Offensive Coordinator Discusses Offensive Philosophy For Next Season

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Since new Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi announced the hiring of new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, many have wondered what the new offense would look like.

Chaney joined the Starkey and Mueller show and talked about what it was about Pitt that convinced him to leave an SEC team in Arkansas.

"I think it's the excitement of working with a new football coach, that always has something to do," Chaney said.  "I feel comfortable with what I've left behind and what we were able to get done and the direction of that program.  I think sometimes you feel like you've done that and it's time to go do something else.  I was kind of feeling that way a little bit.  When this opportunity came its way, I was quick to jump on it.  I think that Coach Narduzzi brings an enthusiasm to the field that I enjoy and I've always watched his defenses and they play with an incredible amount of passion, I hope we can match that on the offensive side.

"Just the excitement of a new situation was what intrigued me the most," he added.  "And then as I studied the program even more, and having the talent level that I feel like we have here, you'd be a fool not to understand that it's a pretty good situation and I was excited about it and I was thankful for the opportunity to be here."

Talking about the weapons he has to use here and his history of using many different styles of offense, Chaney discussed the philosophy he'll use with next years team.

"I favor the best for our football players," Chaney said.  "The unique part about us right now is we have that young man on the outside [Tyler Boyd] who can do a lot of things and we have a tail back [James Conner] who can do a lot, so I'm sure there'll be some balance in there somewhere.  And Chad [Voytik] is a very functional, good football player playing quarterback for us now and he'll only get better.  My past at Purdue, we threw it all the time; my last two years, we ran it all the time.  I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in between, but at the end of the day those two young men have got to touch the ball a lot."
