Movie Review: The Age of Adaline

I will admit it as much as I love movies and my job, I can be idiot sometimes when it comes to films. I was basically kicking and screaming over the fact that I would have to attend this cookie-cutter romance flick The Age Of Adaline starring former CW star Blake Lively. Judging by the previews, the film looked to be a cheesy love story with a touch of magic. I couldn't have been more wrong about this film. Again, I'm a dummy sometimes.

The Age of Adaline stars Lively as Adaline Bowman - a woman who after a mysterious accident, remains 29 years old for almost a century. Seems like a cool gig, right? Well that's where The Age of Adaline separates itself from the pack of goofy Romantic Sci-Fi films like The Time Traveler's Wife. There's no immortal glory in Adaline's life. Just sadness and paranoia caused by her fear that the Government will snatch her up to experiment and exploit her gift. Adaline's life begins to change when she meets a charming philanthropist named Ellis played by Game of Thrones star Michiel Huisman.

Both Lively and Huisman had great chemistry together which helped propel the love story aspect of the film, but there's more than just romance in The Age of Adaline. The movie is actually a thinker wondering how you would live and what would you do with the fountain of youth?  The knowledge and life experiences would be immeasurable, but watching all your loved ones perish would leave a hole in your heart. I don't cry in movies, but I will admit the consequences of immortality made me feel sorrow for the cursed Adaline.

Showing a different side of eternal youth helped make The Age Of Adaline a complete film. It also doesn't hurt to have strong performances from Lively, Huisman and Harrison Ford. I won't spoil too much about Ford's character, but he is a scene stealer and a great twist in the story of Adaline. Without a doubt The Age of Adaline is the biggest surprise so far in 2015 and will probably be contender for biggest surprise all year. Don't judge the film by its previews. The Age of Adaline is more Amazing Stories (Like the 80s reference) than it is The Notebook.

Overall, I give The Age of Adaline 3.25 out of 4 stars.
