Motorists Rescue Small Dog On The Loose In Fort Pitt Tunnel

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Traffic in the Fort Pitt Tunnel was brought to a halt during the morning commute because of a small dog on the loose.

According to witnesses, the incident happened on the inbound side of the tunnel around 10:30 a.m.

A woman driving in the right lane noticed the small Chihuahua mix running toward her. She, along with other motorists stopped and attempted to catch the dog.

The dog eventually ran under a car. Motorists used a combination of kayak paddles and rope to rescue the dog.

Once rescued, the dog was taken to the Humane Society on the North Side in good condition.

The dog did bite one of the people in the tunnel, so it will be held under quarantine for 10 days as a precaution to determine if has any signs of rabies.

The dog did not have tags or a microchip. Once it clears the quarantine, it will be put up for adoption.

Since the dog was shown in earlier KDKA broadcasts, many people have inquired about the pup.

"People have shown a lot of interest in adopting him," said Rachel Tribley of the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, "now that he's here and safe a lot of people who are already chihuahua owners have pretty much melted at this story."
