Police say Gray, who was armed with a handgun, attempted to run from the U.S. Marshals and during the foot pursuit, the suspect fired the handgun. At least one member of the U.S. Marshals Service returned fire.

Gray was found dead at the scene.

Multiple area law enforcement agencies responded to the area.

Police had been searching for Gray since Feb. 16 when Gray allegedly shot a police officer. Gray was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for an equipment violation and was accused of shooting the officer as he was standing outside the vehicle on the driver's side.

The 29-year-old officer was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
