Mom Charged After Boy Crosses Busy Road Alone To See Grandfather

BUFFINGTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- An Indiana County mother is facing child neglect charges, accused of leaving her two young sons unattended while she slept.

Police say Melissa Cassatt, of Homer City, is facing charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.

The incidents happened in Buffington Township. Investigators say the children's grandfather reported that they had allegedly been left unsupervised by their sleeping mother on several occasions.

According to police, on Friday, a 2-year-old boy was found inside his home with a soiled diaper.

In another incident, police say a 4-year-old boy walked across Route 403 to go and see his grandfather.

Indiana County CYS was called in.

Police say the boys' grandparents will care for them during the hours that their father is at work.

Meanwhile, Cassatt was taken into custody and was being held in the Indiana County Jail to await arraignment.
