Memorial Service Held For Fallen Perryopolis Police Officer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A memorial service will be held Sunday for a Perryopolis Police Officer killed in the line of duty earlier this month.

The service will be held at St. John the Baptist Parish at 3 p.m. Sunday for Officer Richard Champion.

Champion, 34, was killed Dec. 14 in a car crash while on duty.

His funeral was held Dec. 19 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ligonier. He was accorded full military and law-enforcement honors.

Officers from as far away as New York City showed up to pay their respects.

Champion was father to a 16-month-old baby and was an Iraq War veteran. He joined the Perryopolis Police force about eight months ago.

The other driver injured in the crash, 59-year-old Andrew Bohatch from Uniontown, also died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital just after 4 p.m. on the same day as Champion's funeral.
