McKeesport Boy Gets To Be Mayor For The Day

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) -- A McKeesport boy with a serious illness enjoyed a rare treat, he got to be mayor for the day.

Nasir Williams' fourth grade teacher is also one of his best friends.

Tracie Pry helps him through difficult days at Twin Rivers Intermediate School, as he copes with a serious illness.

"He has the biggest heart," his teacher said. "Always a big smile on his face. I come to work as a teacher to encourage and inspire kids, and instead the tables have gotten turned, and he has inspired and encouraged me."

Tracie Pry came up with an idea.

"I actually contacted the mayor of McKeesport, to see if he would come up and met Nasir."

Mayor Michael Cherepko, now acting Nasir's assistant, declared the boy "Mayor for a Day."

"We're going to go see the guys, and they're going to take you down to your office," Nasir's "assistant" said, as they walked to a fire truck parked in front of the school. The young "mayor" was outfitted with firefighters' gear, then got a ride through town on the truck.

Finally, they arrived at City Hall, where Michael Cherepko introduced the boy mayor to his staff. Then, he officially swore Nasir in for his one-day office.

The boy's mother, Jasmine Williams, says he couldn't wait for this day.

"He's like, Mom, I'm ready to go. Ready to go on the fire truck in the morning. Ride on the fire truck, and honk the horn."

He also received the key to the city.
