McCandless police find suspected vehicle involved in deadly hit-and-run

MCCANDLESS, Pa. (KDKA) — McCandless police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a man during the weekend.

Don Leach, 78, of Wexford was killed in a hit-and-run in McCandless. Provided

Don Leach, 78, of Wexford, was struck and killed as he crossed McKnight Road on Saturday night, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said. Now, police are trying to find the driver who is responsible.

Family members shared a photo of Leach, who they say was a wonderful brother, father and grandfather. He worked at the Target in the Pine Creek Shopping Center near the incident.

His family said Leach was crossing McKnight Road at Blazier Drive around 10:20 p.m. when a driver struck him, and then took off.

Investigators said on Monday afternoon that they found the vehicle suspected to be involved in the crash. They previously said it was most likely a black Honda Accord that had a lot of damage to the front and passenger side of the vehicle. They did not say where the vehicle was found.

McCandless Police seeking information regarding deadly hit-and-run

McCandless Police Chief Ryan Hawk said Monday that there is a crosswalk where Leach was hit, but police have no video from that area. Hawk said they don't have cameras near that intersection and the department is in the process of getting cameras in the area.

"Any witnesses that might have seen something, of course, come forward," Hawk said.

Hawk added that officers are chasing down leads. He wants to get answers for a grieving family.

"Very tragic for the family. Difficult for closure in any circumstance," Hawk said.

It is not clear if there are any suspects.
