Mayor Peduto Appealing Police Residency Decision, Ready To Compromise
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto says he will appeal the decision to allow police to live outside of the city, which was made by an arbitrator.
Peduto says the decision isn't up to a third-party arbitrator, but ultimately the mayor and city officials.
In November, a residency referendum passed with 80 percent approval, and Peduto says he agrees with the public that city police officers should have to live within city limits.
"With so much excitement about our city from residents, the nation and the world, I can't imagine why police would want to leave it," Peduto said in a statement. "I am eager to sit at the bargaining table and negotiate in a fair and open process."
Peduto says he is ready to negotiate and come to a compromise on the residency issue.
