Man Rescued From Hillside After Getting Stuck On Way To River
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh EMS worked to pull a man to safety after he got stuck climbing down a hillside in Squirrel Hill Friday.
Officials say the man, who was wearing flip flops, got stuck on a pathway under the Homestead Grays Bridge while trying to take a shortcut down to the river from Brownsville Road.
Acting Rescue Division Chief James Holman said the man got to a point, about 100 feet down, where he realized he couldn't go back up the path or continue going down without getting hurt and called 911.
Holman said responders had a difficult time finding the man at first because of the dense trees, but eventually found him after hearing him.
"He's really not injured, but he's stuck," Holman said. "And we had the time and the resources to further evaluate it, send another rescue crew down with additional equipment, where we set belay equipment up, put the victim into a rescue harness and then moved him over a little bit and then lowered him down about another 80 feet through a very loose and steep hillside."
The man, who does not want his name used, was a bit shaken and has some cuts on his feet. But is, for the most part, okay.
"I tried to go climbing, leave it to the professionals," he said.
He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital to be checked out.
