Man Escapes Ambulance, Jumps Off Bridge

APOLLO, Pa. (AP) — A man escaped from an ambulance and jumped off a western Pennsylvania bridge, but was rescued.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the unidentified man jumped off the Apollo Bridge and into the Kiskiminetas River at about noon Sunday. That's about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

State police Lt. Tom Dubovi says an ambulance was taking the man for a mental health evaluation when he somehow escaped and ran onto the bridge.

Police shut down the bridge but the man jumped into the river about 55 feet below, and members of the Armstrong County boat rescue team picked him up downstream. He was unconscious but breathing, and later regained consciousness.

The man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. Authorities say his injuries are not life-threatening.
