Man charged with firing shotgun rounds into ceiling of North Fayette hotel room
The Extended Stay America in North Fayette is now condemned - its guests displaced, its halls flooded, and lights out. This was after 39-year-old Levi Barela allegedly fired a shotgun inside the building.
One guest told KDKA he returned from work at 2 a.m. and couldn't even get inside.
"He hit the sprinkler system, that's flooded the entire building," said Jeff, a guest at the hotel. "So obviously you can't have people living in a hotel when there's no water."
Jeff said his belongings were mostly unaffected.
"The stuff in my room is fine, the halls are a little squishy," he said.
According to police, Barela believed federal agents were pursuing him and fired rounds into the hotel ceiling. Officers later found him at the Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, just across the street, still armed with a loaded shotgun.
They say he handed the weapon over peacefully and told officers he was looking for his wife.
"It sounds like everyone's okay, nobody got hit by anything," said Jeff. "From what I understand, there were four shotgun blasts and a mental health episode."
The shotgun blast damaged water lines, collapsed parts of the ceiling, and cut power and water to the building. North Fayette Police Chief Donald Cokus says the investigation remains active, but confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Barela is now receiving care at Western Psychiatric Hospital.
"Finding another hotel it's an inconvenience, but is it going to ruin my day? No," said Jeff.
"I just hope everyone's okay. Sounds like everyone's fine. We'll move on from here."
At this time, it's unclear when the Extended Stay America will reopen or when Barela will appear before a judge.
KDKA-TV has reached out to Extended Stay America for comment but has not yet received a response.
