Police: Man Sets Self On Fire Drinking Moonshine While Lighting Furnace

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - Arson investigators were called to an early Tuesday morning basement fire on the North Side.

When fire crews arrived on scene on Overbeck Street around 2:45 a.m., they found a man with burns to his legs.

Neighbors said the man's name is Tony and that he was screaming in pain because his legs had been burned badly. The neighbors said they know the 30-year-old through family and that he was highly intoxicated.

"He told a neighbor that he started the fire when he was drinking moonshine and trying to light his furnace," Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for third-degree burns to his legs. He is expected to be okay.

The fire is still under investigation, but no charges are expected to be filed.
