Man Accused Of Trying To Rob Lawrenceville Woman Held For Court

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man accused of trying to rob a young woman in earlier this month in Lawrenceville was held for court during a hearing this morning.

Fred Perella, 31, of Carnegie, is accused of trying to run away with 26-year-old Maggie Negrete's wallet back on May 18.

When she started to yell, her neighbors jumped into action, chasing down and eventually stopping Perella, and then holding him down until police arrived.

"It makes you feel great to have neighbors like that, to live in a neighborhood like that," said Negrete after the hearing. "They just kind of knew what to do and took advantage of the situation, and not only got my stuff back, but I found out today in court… retrieved a student - who was originally from India - so his passport, his tickets, things for him to go home were in that bag."

Negrete says she wants to give back to the neighbors who jumped in to help her.

Perella faces charges of robbery, and receiving stolen property.

Perella is being held in jail on $10,000.
