Woman says Pittsburgh-area Lowe's lied to her dad, who is colorblind, about what color toolkit he was buying

Editor's Note: This story has been updated with information from Lowe's which, in a statement, offered to refund the purchase, but also says "there is no evidence" one of its associates responded inappropriately.

Lowe's said it investigated a viral social media post about the mistreatment of a customer who is colorblind and found "no evidence" that employees responded inappropriately.

Jackie Carbasho posted to social media saying that her dad, Frank Carbasho, wanted to buy her a pink toolkit for her birthday. But she says when he went home, he learned he had bought a blue toolkit instead — something he didn't realize because he's colorblind.

"I told him I wanted this pink Kobalt tool set, because girls have pink," Jackie Carbasho said.

She said her dad drove an hour from West Virginia to a Lowe's in Robinson. The receipt from that day shows he spent $61.01 on what he thought was the pink tool kit.

"[He] texted a picture of it to my aunt and she was like, 'oh no, it's blue, they actually lied to you,'" she said.

It's an alleged lie that the employee who helped Frank Carbasho could get away with because he is colorblind.

"He explained to me then that he came and tried to get the pink one and was assured by a sales associate at Lowe's that it was pink," Jackie Carbasho said.

"To me, when he's telling me the story, and to him, it definitely felt intentional," she added.

In a statement, Lowe's said it immediately started an investigation into the allegations.

"After reviewing video footage of the store interaction, a recording of the call with our customer care team and conducting internal interviews – there is no evidence our associates made these alleged remarks or responded in an inappropriate way," Lowe's said.

But Jackie Carbasho said her dad was met with "ridicule" when he reached out to people at the local and corporate levels.

She said Lowe's told them, "'Oh, you know, we'll call you back,' and then nothing's ever happened. They just kind of laughed it off and went about their day."

Lowe's, however, said the assistant store manager spoke with Frank Carbasho the day of his purchase and apologized.

Jackie Carbasho took to Facebook, sharing the story with nearly 400 shares. To her, it's not about a pink gift or getting a return. She said it's about getting an apology and letting others know that "every day people with disabilities are made fun of and it's not something that should happen."

Lowe's said it has reached out to Frank Carbasho to tell him it's expediting a pink toolset to his daughter and the company has offered to refund his purchase.
