Local Pub Offering Customers Discount To Put Down Their Cell Phones

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- James Street Gastropub and Speakeasy is well known in the Pittsburgh area as a jazz club and restaurant.

But, beginning Wednesday night, it will also be known as a hands-free spot.

"You will be greeted by the host or hostess and they will give you the option of putting the phone in a safe location that will be kept at the table in case of emergencies," says Kevin Saftner, the restaurant's general manager.

The idea is simple.

If you're out for the evening, enjoy the evening, and not on your phone, which can be distracting to the musicians, the wait staff, and of course, the people you're out with.

"I hate seeing people on their phones when I'm out. I'm a big supporter of everyone putting their phones away and enjoying each other's company," says Mary Sweeney, of Highland Park.

"I think it's going to allow people to connect more on a spiritual level, without the distraction of having a phone in your face," James Dickens, of McKeesport, said.

Normally, person takes a seat and puts their phone on the table in plain view.

But now, if you chose to go hands-free at James Street, your entire party will get a 20 percent discount on your bill.

"I like the idea of the 20 percent discount," said Khalif Ali, of the North Side. "It's encouraging something I think is beneficial to people, take a little time away from your cell phone."

The hands-free zone will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Right now, it's anyone's guess just how popular going without the phone might become.

"I think it's a great way for couples and friends to just go out and say put away the technology," said Jose Chu, of Scott Township.
