Local Musical "Tink" Selected For New York Music Festival

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- It's Tinkerbell as we've never seen her before.

A musical called "Tink" was performed at the Palace Theater in Greensburg recently. Rehearsals took place at the nearby Stage Right theater company.

The Fifth Ward Schoolhouse in Greensburg had sat vacant for years. Then, Stage Right purchased it, and those old hallways now ring with the voices of young performers. Classes are held just about all day long.

Artistic director Tony Marino wrote the script for "Tink." The star is Tinkerbell, before Peter Pan arrives in Neverland. In other words, it's a prequel.

"How does Tink become Peter Pan's fairy?" the author asks. "How does Captain Hook become Captain Hook? So we tell those origins in the story. And in our show, in fact, Peter Pan literally drops from the sky at the end of act one."

It's one of nine original productions picked from hundreds worldwide, for a chance to perform in the New York Music Festival. Renate Marino, Tony's wife, choreographed the show without the use of any flying apparatus.

"I kept her movements very still while the projections were moving around her," she explains, "to give that kind of feel of flying, without leaving the floor."

A Kickstarter campaign is helping to raise the $60,000 needed to take the show to New York. If you'd like to help them, visit: http://tinkmusical.com/.

But what about the fact that Tinkerbell on stage is a full size woman?

"There are certain things that are suspension of disbelief," Tony laughs.

Maybe that's why they call it Never Never Land.
