Vandalism, Deterioration Threatening American Flag Shrine In Rochester

ROCHESTER (KDKA) -- Repairs are expected to cost thousands of dollars after vandals broke the lights that surrounded the Beaver County Flag Plaza in Rochester.

It's a symbol of sacrifice, patriotism, respect and pride.

The Beaver County Chapter of Flags Across America has worked hard for more than 13 years to keep the 30 foot by 60 foot American Flag, flapping over the Ohio River. They're real proud of it.

"This plaza has become one of the icons for Beaver County," said Mathew Cucinelli, of Beaver County Flags Across America.

But the future of the flag plaza could be in jeopardy.

Lighting for 26 replicas of early American flags is out. Some of the lights were vandalized; others are just worn out. And you're not supposed to fly the flags without lighting.

But they need about $25,000 to install new lights.

"We do need funds to keep it going. And that's what were trying to do here now," said Frank Dodson, of Beaver County Flags Across America.

They're confident they'll raise the money. Also, maybe get a grant from Duquesne Light and Beaver County. They say it's well worth it to protect the symbol of our nation.

"There's probably 100,000 people a day that are able to witness that gorgeous flag," says Cucinelli.

"A place you can come for reflection and it's all about the flag and the many people that died for the flag," Dodson added.

You can make a donation to Beaver County Flags Across America at PO BOX 42. Rochester, Pa. 15074.
