Newsradio 1020 KDKA Editorial: Let's Talk

There's been a growing disconnect in this country –

Between police – and the public.

It didn't start August 9^th in Ferguson, Missouri.

But that did seem to be the trigger –

For what became nationwide demonstrations –

To protest what people see as racism – and police brutality.

It's gratifying to see people –

Of all ages – races – and economic status –

Join in a common cause.

It brings back images of the Civil Rights movement of the 60's.

What's frightening is the seemingly universal hatred –

And distrust of law enforcement and the judicial system.

When a relationship fails –

Both parties are responsible.

The relationship between police and the public has failed –

And now it's going to take both sides to fix it.

Law enforcement can change training –

And do what it must to regain public trust.

But it won't work if the public believes the police are always wrong –

And people refuse to obey the law –

Or those trying to enforce it.

It's time for law enforcement and the public –

To join in a common cause to keep everyone safe.

Efforts that exclude either side won't help – or heal the divide.
