Latest Round Of PennDOT Work To Close Outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – In the latest Pittsburgh tunnel update, the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel will close for several weekends.

"We're going to be taking down the tunnel ceiling in the outbound tunnel this weekend," said Steve Cowan with PennDOT.

Starting this weekend – and for the next eight weekends – the outbound side will be closed as workers try to update and repair the aging roof. It will be similar to the work that's been done in the Liberty Tunnel, bringing down the false ceiling which was used for ventilation, but is no longer needed.

In doing this, about 50,000 drivers will have to be rerouted. And Carson Street to the West End bypass will have to handle traffic from the Parkway East, Parkway North and Liberty Avenue ramp coming out of downtown.

The weekend closures will have to be carefully choreographed around the Steelers, Pitt, Penguins and holiday shopping season, so there will only be one more this year.

"That will be on the inbound side," said Cowan. "That will happen in December. We're still in the process of scheduling that."
