PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Democratic Congressman Conor Lamb is running for the United States Senate.

On Friday morning, Rep. Lamb made his campaign announcement official by posting a video to his Twitter account.

"Later today, I'm announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate," he says in the video. "I believe this is the most important Senate seat in the country."

Rep. Lamb later declared his candidacy during an afternoon speech in front of a crowd of supporters at the IBEW Union Hall on Pittsburgh's South Side.

Taking jabs at former President Donald Trump and his supporters, Lamb said it's time to stop fighting and think about the future.

"If we want our children to inherit not only a free and equal country but a safe and livable planet, we can do something about that too. We have to," he said.

He's jumping into a race that's expected to be very long and very expensive. However, political analysts believe Lamb will be a top candidate.

Right now, 10 Democrats are in the race hoping to replace Sen. Pat Toomey, who is retiring at the end of his term.

A well-known challenger is Lt. Gov. John Fetterman of Braddock. Fetterman has already raised $3.1 million compared to Lamb's $1.8 million.

On the other side of the political aisle, seven Republicans are also vying for the Senate seat.

Some of them are running on a platform similar to that of former President Donald Trump. That includes Kathy Barnette of Montgomery County.

Also in the race is Sean Parnell, who ran against Lamb for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020 in a close race.

KDKA will have continuing coverage of Lamb's announcement in our evening news and here on KDKA.com.
