Kevin Greene: 'I Always Want To Be Known As A Steeler'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- Former Steelers LB Kevin Greene will be on the field for the Steelers-Chiefs game Sunday night to receive his Hall of Fame ring. But before that, he joined The Cook and Poni Show on Friday to talk about it.

So why did he decide to return to Pittsburgh for this honor?

"It's a no brainier. I want to be remembered as a Steeler," Greene said. "The saying is once a Steeler, always a Steeler"

Greene spent three years in Pittsburgh during his 15-year career from 1993-95.

He said it was an honor to be a part of such a rich tradition in Steelers football and there was nothing better than playing in front of the crazy fans here.

"Playing in front of the Steelers Nation was just electric," Greene said. "It was a phenomenal energetic feeling playing in front of Steelers Nation."

He will see those electric fans again Saturday night when he is honored by the legendary band, Styx, and then will receive his Hall of Fame ring during a ceremony Sunday night during the game.

Greene tried to get a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers and had a chance in 1995 when they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl 30. It was a game that he said still haunts him.

He never won a ring in his 15 years as a player and that Super Bowl loss was his only shot, but he did finally get one as a coach 15 years later with the Green Bay Packers, when, of course, they beat the Steelers in Super Bowl 45. He says the win was bittersweet.

"Fifteen years later, I'm coaching in it against my beloved Steelers, and I had a job to do," Greene said. "I was grateful to finally win a Super Bowl ring, which is a rare feat in itself, but it did kind of rock because I beat my team."
