Kennywood Hosts Runners And Coaster Enthusiasts For Unique 5K

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Kennywood opened its doors to runners, in addition to hosting a roller coaster 5K Saturday.

For the first time, the theme park opened its ground to a 5K walk/run. A 10K also wound through the park and surrounding communities of West Mifflin and Duquesne.

Hundreds of people competed in the race before Kennywood opened.

But once the park did open, it also invited people to participate in a "Roller Coaster Race," which involved riding its six roller coasters. A rider on all six coasters would travel 16,405 feet, equal to a 5K.

"Pittsburgh loves Kennywood, and Pittsburgh loves running, making this the perfect setting for the Roller Coaster Race," said Adam Slate, Kennywood's Roller Coaster Director. "The initial response to the event has been extraordinary. We are grateful to have been welcomed so warmly by the community."

All Coaster 5K participants were asked to donate $50 to a charity of their choice.
