KDKA's Larry Richert Gets 'Cupping' Treatment Live On Air

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - It has been a staple of Chinese medicine for centuries, but the practice known as cupping is only now getting attention in the United States, thanks in part to Olympian Michael Phelps and other athletes in Rio, who were seen with purple welts on their backs.

Dr. Michelle Tucker, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, joined the "KDKA Morning News" in studio to explain how the process works. She also demonstrated on host Larry Richert.

"The skin is an organ, it's the largest organ, so if we can manipulate the skin...we can influence many structures under the skin. Muscles, blood vessel, nerves, even organs," Dr. Tucker said.

Dr. Tucker knows there are skeptics out there, but she said most people that come to her as a last resort for pain relief usually leave surprised with the positive results.

Dr. Tucker, a native of the South Side, is also an acupuncturist and she says the 5000-year-old treatment works the same way as cupping, only on a smaller scale.

Dr. Tucker says she treats both young and old in pain as well as other ailments such as asthma and smoking cessation.
