Jack Wilson: Hard Work Resonated With Fans

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Former Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson will be at Opening Day Monday.

The Silver Slugger Award winner in 2004 will present the award to 2013 award winners Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen.

Wilson was a fan favorite in Pittsburgh, and KDKA's Bob Pompeani asked Wilson why he thought that was.

"I played the game hard, the way my dad and coaches taught me growing up," Wilson said. "I think it was the hard work, getting after it every play, every game, and just bringing a lot of energy, as much as I could to help the team. I think that kind of resonated with the fans."

Wilson said that he enjoyed following last season's team as they reached the playoffs for the first time since 1992.

"I sent out a lot of texts to a lot of people in the front office and everything, just congratulating them on kind of ending the streak and saying good luck in the postseason. It was just really exciting for me," Wilson said.
